Cairns Tropical Pride 2011 - Festival Guide
Cairns Tropical Pride Festival is an annual event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community of Cairns and Far North Queensland, as well as their families and friends, to celebrate the diversity of the region and connect to the wider community.
2011 marks the fifth annversary of this popular and fast-growing event, which is destined to become a leading national event in the LGBTQ calendar. The festival's winter timing fits in with the most idyllic time to visit Tropical North Queensland: whilst the southerners are finding it a bit chilly and are dreaming of a warm, tropical getaway, Cairns is usually a pleasant 25c during the day, making the Cairns Tropical Pride festivities a desirable holiday experience for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people from around the country.
With previous years' Fair Day attracting over 2000 people, and over 500 at the official Dance Party, Cairns Tropical Pride Festival 2011 will be even BIGGER and BETTER than ever!
This year's events include:
Saturday 20th August - Out! Proud! Dance Party from 9pm til late, The Heritage Nightclub, cnr Spence & Lake Streets Come along and enjoy the party. DJ Been and Trent E will be playing all the anthems to keep the dancefloor pumpin' all night long and local legend Destiny will be doing what she is best known for: crowd-stopping performances!
Wednesday 24th August - Ageing Differently from 5-8pm at the Cairns City Council Chambers. Celebrating Queensland Seniors Week, this free event is to highlight the issues of ageing for LGBT communities of North Queensland. Food will be provided, so please RSVP to Healthy Communities on 4041 5451 or email mquick@qahc.org.au.
Wednesday 24th August - Cairns Planet Positive from 6pm @ Bernie's Jazz & Piano Bar, 92 Abbott St. A fun night out for HIV positive people and their friends. Food and refreshments provided. For more information, please contact David on 1800 241 or email dcouplanjones@qpp.org.au.
Friday 26th August - Cairns Tropical Pride Community Awards & Fundraiser Night from 6:30pm at Turtle Cove Resort. Come along for the great food and entertainment and recognise the work being done by many volunteers in the community. Tickets $27.50 ($7.50 going back into Pride)
Sunday 28th August - Cairns Tropical Pride Fair Day from 10:30am - 6pm at The Tanks Art Centre, Collins Avenue, Edge Hill, only $5 entry. The Highlight of the 2011 Tropical Pride Festival - come and join in a family day full of food, frivolity, and fun, with diverse community stalls dotting the pathways, a wealth of talented performers including the OutLoud LGBT Choir, an outdoor Dance Arena, and events such as an Art Show, Dog Show, and Gay Bingo.
